At Charleston Allergy and Asthma, we strive to provide personable, compassionate care for all of our patients. From celebrating some of life’s most special milestones, to helping treat patient allergies and more, getting to serve you is the absolute best part of our jobs! We thought you might want to get to know us a little bit too, and we’ve put together this blog to help you do just that. Without further ado, we’re happy to introduce you to the board-certified allergists behind our practice!
Bruce D. Ball, MD
Although he did not initially see himself working in medicine, Dr. Bruce Ball discovered his passion for the field while pursuing a master’s program in anatomy. This led him to attend medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Ball credits his love for the allergy field to his mentor, Dr. Hoffman, who opened his eyes to all the good he could do in the field during his three years of residency in pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Sciences – Houston.
When he is in the office, Dr. Ball says he loves coming in because everyone on the Charleston Allergy and Asthma staff is so wonderful and a joy to work with. Outside of his clinical hours, he loves connecting with friends and traveling.
Andrew E. Davidson, MD
Growing up, Dr. Andrew Davidson has always been interested in the science behind many of his family’s and friends’ jobs in the medical field. Having grown up with allergies and even receiving allergy shots, pursuing a career as an immunologist seemed like the perfect fit as he knew he could empathize and connect with his future patients.
Dr. Davidson has gone on record to say how he loves solving intellectual challenges, and you can witness this in the enjoyment he shows while using his knowledge to help heal and comfort his patients. Dr. Davidson has also described his fellow staff as his family, noting that he has great respect for the skills of his colleagues in every department and how he takes pride in being part of a team of caring professionals working towards the same goal.
When Dr. Davidson is not in the office, he loves staying active and spending time out in the Lowcountry nature by biking, hiking, fishing and spending time with family.
Jeffrey J. Dietrich, MD
When Dr. Jeffrey Dietrich set out to find a career, his main goal was to use his medical knowledge and skills to help others. As an allergy and asthma specialist, he discovered that he could help improve the quality of life for countless patients and, as they say, the rest is history!
Dr. Dietrich’s favorite part about being an allergist is that his work provides others with comfort and allows them to find joy in things that were previously off-limits. He said, “I love helping patients with asthma and allergies get control so that they can be around their pets or be outdoors enjoying activities they love to do.” Like many of his fellow doctors, he refers to our practice as “family.”
In his free time, Dr. Dietrich can often be found coaching his children’s sports teams and spending time with family and friends. He is an avid fan of water sports, like swimming, paddle boarding and fishing, so it’s no surprise that his favorite thing about Charleston is the easy water access.
Meredith L. Moore, MD
Although Dr. Meredith Moore spent nine years as a general pediatrician, it was during this time that she discovered her excitement for allergy and asthma treatment. She’d come to admire the teachable aspect of the specialty and how excited and empowered her patients would become as they learned to take control of their symptoms. It’s this teaching she enjoys most as an allergist today, as well as sharing knowledge and learning more in her field alongside her patients and staff.
When asked her favorite thing about Charleston Allergy and Asthma, Dr. Moore says that it is the kindness and compassion in daily interactions between the staff with one another and their patients. In fact, it’s an emphasis on being a compassionate provider that has guided her throughout her 25+ years in medicine.
In her free time, Dr. Moore enjoys learning new things, whether it be a new hobby or skill or mastering a different facet of medicine. This past year, she spent her time surfing, gardening and earning an MBA.
Lindsey S. Steadman, MD
Dr. Lindsey Steadman has been a scientist at heart since she was a little girl growing up in her parents’ dental office. In school, she always loved biology and chemistry and would jump at the chance to do a research project on any medical diagnosis and profession she could. She later fell in love with the world of allergies and immunology during her medical rotations and loves being part of a constantly evolving medical field.
At the heart of it all, Dr. Steadman says that working alongside her patients to reach a better quality of life has been her favorite part of her career. She believes that patients should be part of the treatment process, not only on the receiving end, and enjoys working with them to develop treatment plans and educate them on their allergies. When it comes to our practice, she is quick to share how meaningful the team’s tightknit relationships are how this helps them serve their patients even better.
In her free time, Dr. Steadman loves to read, work out and spend time with her loved ones. She also enjoys getting more adventurous now and again by scuba diving, wakeboarding and even snowboarding.
Carolyn R. Word, MD
Dr. Carolyn Word was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by her grandfather, who was a general physician. She describes visiting his office and being inspired by how the patients appreciated his care and how much her grandfather genuinely loved caring for his patients. In high school, Dr. Word would also accompany her current husband to his allergy shot appointments after school, which introduced her to the importance of her specialty at a young age.
This doctor’s favorite part about her job is helping patients and seeing her work improve their lives first-hand. Dr. Word is grateful for each member of the Charleston Allergy and Asthma team as all their unique contributions come together to make taking care of patients their top priority.
In her spare time, Dr. Word can be found either in the kitchen or exploring the great outdoors. She loves spending time with her children and husband and surprising colleagues and friends with baked goods.
