Food allergies can be challenging enough on their own, but for local food allergy sufferers, the delicious temptation of Charleston’s culinary scene adds some extra difficulty. Luckily, our diverse food ecosystem is highly food-allergy friendly, with tasty options to please all tastebuds from Downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant, Summerville, North Charleston and beyond.

With outdoor dining season at its peak, our board-certified allergists have compiled another helpful guide of recommendations for allergy-friendly restaurants in Charleston.

Butcher and Bee

What could be better than a scrumptiously safe dining experience? One that incorporates only the freshest ingredients sourced from local farms and fishermen. From lunch to dinner, Butcher and Bee offers diverse seasonal menus of sandwiches, bowls, dips, dinners and more, with customizable plates and substitutions available.

FIG (Food Is Good)

A Holy City favorite, Food Is Good, a.k.a. FIG, is Lowcountry-inspired fine dining at its finest. FIG’s commitment to its patrons is loud and clear, stating, “A sincere effort to educate our staff on all aspects of food and beverage culture is the basis for our service philosophy. It is our goal that guests feel special, comfortable and well taken care of.”

Muse Restaurant & Wine Bar

For those with wheat allergies, pasta (and most Italian options) is often out of the question. Thankfully, Muse Restaurant & Wine Bar changes all that. Based in the refurbished rooms of a classic Charleston home, Muse provides an intimate and safe space for Charleston allergy sufferers to experience these iconic flavors. Substitutions and vegetarian menu options are clearly labeled for diners’ convenience and peace of mind. As with all dining establishments, always consult your waiting staff regarding any food allergies and ingredient substitutions.

Poke Tea House

From classic poke bowls to delicious bubble teas, the Poke Tea House has something for everyone…including those with food allergies. Due to the unique build-your-own nature of poke dishes, patrons can easily construct a bowl of fresh ingredients that suits their dietary needs. Dairy-free options are available for those craving teas.

Basic Kitchen

With a rotating seasonal menu focused on simplicity, Basic Kitchen creates dishes from around the world using local ingredients that positively impact its diners and community. Substitutions are available, though unlisted on menus. Speak with your hosts when dining for a safe and elevated experience.

NOTE: While these restaurants have earned a reputation for accommodating food allergies, those experiencing food allergies are always recommended to contact any restaurant prior to dining. Charleston Allergy & Asthma has not received any compensation or promotion for the above selections; all recommendations are based on customer reviews and online feedback.
